First, I should explain who we are not.
- None of us have culinary degrees, but we know several people who do,
- None of us currently work in restaurants, but have in the past.
- None of us really like the Gourmet Web sites online, but we do frequent them.
You see, our issue is most food shows and web sites are produced by food professionals. These are the people who have staff to prep and clean, never really get their hands dirty in the kitchen, and most importantly, cook and present one dish at time.
Let’s face it, when was the last time, let’s say on a Tuesday night, you cooked dinner and plated each serving and delivered it to your family at the table like you would get a meal in a restaurant? My guess is never.
People don’t cook or serve dinner that way. We cook meals, deliver them to the table and our family serves themselves. There isn’t a cooking show out there (since Julia) that does that.
Speaking of Julia. That’s where I got most of my “training”. As a kid, I was drawn to these shows on PBS. I never knew why, and never mentioned it to to anyone. But I learned a tremendous amount watching them as they were produced, and later on as reruns.
Do you know she did an entire show on hard boiled eggs?
There was also Jacques Pépin and Yan Can Cook. Both of the early shows they produced were targeted to the everyday cook. I remember Yan showing everyone just how to debone a chicken. Great stuff.
Thanks much,
Keith J
